In the United States, a greater portion of the population smokes. This number also includes the elders. There are ill effects of smoking, and we know about them. But as a person ages, the problems start becoming apparent. It is vital to understand the adverse effects of smoking, including cigars, cigarettes, and cigarillos, on the elderly. We shall also be covering the benefits of stopping smoking.
Elderly and smoking
Although the exact number is hard to calculate, it is found that around 38 million people all across the globe smoke. Approximately 13% of women and 17% of men smoke daily as per the Centers for Disease Control data. Among the Native Americans, 31.8% of people smoke.
Older adults have the highest percentage of smokers. It has been found by the CDC that around 18% of the elders smoke (between the ages of 45 and 64). This data is the highest among all the age groups. From 65 and above, 9% of elders smoke. In the United States, smoking is one of the major killing factors. A study shows that from all the US deaths because of smoking, 70% occur in the elderly.
Substances in tobacco products
Smoked tobacco products such as cigarettes and others have several chemicals to make you addicted to the product. Such products slowly kill you. However, the ill effects of smoking are more ostensible in older adults than in young people.
Given below are some of the primary carcinogens (or cancer-causing substances) by the American Cancer Society.
· Lead: It isn't a chemical one wants to introduce in his/her body because the required amount is already present in the body.
· Nicotine: It is a very addictive chemical found in the plants of tobacco. Like heroin, nicotine is challenging to quit.
· Carbon monoxide: CO is a poisonous gas.
· Formaldehyde: This toxic chemical is used for carpeting and treating wood.
There are several other chemicals in cigars and cigarettes that are harmful to the bodies of older adults.
Ill effects of smoking on older adults
Some of the physical harm caused due to smoking in older people are:
· Thick, dark mucus: A major issue with tobacco products is that they cause coarse and thick coughs. Smoking also harms the lungs. When your lungs face irritation, a dark mucus is created, especially when you get up after a nap.
· Wrinkles and dry skin: Smoking makes your skin less elastic and dries it out. It causes wrinkles.
· Less muscle: The oxygen levels in your body are low. So, there is a lack of muscle development.
· Erectile dysfunction: An elderly who smokes cannot maintain or develop an erection because of smoking.
Conclusion
With all the side effects of smoking on the elderly, a vital issue to note is their immune system's overall weakening. The chemicals are very potent and slow down the working process of humans. Out of all those who die because of tobacco product consumption, their bodies' inability to heal the diseases is the biggest reason for fatality.
